A valid driving licence with a two-wheeler endorsement, and one original photo ID. Indian riders bring a licence and Aadhaar or a PAN card. Visitors from abroad bring a passport and either an International Driving Permit or a home licence that clearly covers motorcycles.

We hold a refundable deposit against the vehicle, returned in full at drop-off once the bike comes back in the condition it left in. Nothing is charged online — we confirm the vehicle, the paperwork and the final total with you directly before you ride away.

A helmet comes with every two-wheeler, and a second one for your pillion at no extra cost. It is both the law in Rajasthan and the single thing most worth insisting on.

If this is a city trip — the ghats, Lake Pichola, the Jagdish temple, dinner somewhere across town — take a scooter. No gears, somewhere to put a bag, and far easier in old-city lanes that were built for feet and horses.

If you want the roads out of town, take a Royal Enfield. Sajjangarh, the climb to the Monsoon Palace, the ridge road toward Kumbhalgarh: these are long, open, curving roads where a heavier bike is more comfortable and considerably more fun.

If you're riding two-up with luggage for several days, a Meteor or a Classic 350 will carry it without complaint. A scooter will do it, but you'll feel every kilometre by the third day.

Traffic in the old city is slow, dense and improvisational. Nobody is in a hurry and nobody indicates. Ride at walking pace between the ghats and you will be fine.

Fuel is easy to find on the ring road and near Fateh Sagar, and scarce once you're properly out in the hills — fill up before you leave town rather than after.

October to March is the good season: cool mornings, clear light, comfortable afternoons. April to June gets genuinely hot by eleven, so ride early and stop through the middle of the day. The monsoon makes the Aravallis green and the ghat roads slick — beautiful, and worth a little more caution.
